Of the 90,000 Tibetans taking refuge in India, 30,000 live in different settlements in Karnataka. The Bylakuppe settlement in Kodagu district alone is home to over 20,000 Tibetans

  1. I had the opportunity to visit the Tibetan Camp at Bylakuppe during 1974 and spent nearly 30 days speaking to all the Tibetan boys who had lived there at that time. They came to me in small batches, and I spoke to each one of them on an individual basis. I had a Tibetan language interpreter who had assisted me, and many of them also understand Hindi and were able to speak directly. I was most impressed by their understanding of their own Tibetan Identity and most of them were fully mentally prepared to defend the Identity and all of them clearly aspired to live in Free Tibet in spite of India's hospitality and the peaceful life they enjoyed at Bylakuppe.
