HYPERTENSION AND CHOLESTEROL

BLOOD PRESSURE (HIGH) / HYPERTENSION AND CHOLESTEROL (HYPERCHOLESTEROAEMIA)

By Swami Avdhutananda
( Ex Acharya,Chinmaya Mission-Sikkim,India )

Swamiji discusses the various therapies available to cure Hypertension and Cholesterol. It is Yoga therapy,Laughter therapy,Water therapy,Oil therapy,Nature Cures,Wheat Grass therapy and food therapy.
The same are discussed in detail in this article.

CAUTION: All the yoga practices given below should be practised under the guidance of a trained and experienced yoga teacher. Yoga practices prescribed for high blood pressure and cholesterol are with the assumption that the patient doesn't suffer from any other health problems apart from the aforesaid one for which yoga therapy is suggested, as certain yoga practices may be contra-indicated for other health conditions. Contra-indications, if any, for various yogaasana-s and yogik kriyaa-s are given in Appendix I. In case of multiple ailments the patient should always seek guidance from an experienced yoga teacher. Similarly, in the suggested diets, in case of multiple ailments, foods that have to be avoided in case of individual ailment should be avoided even though it may not be so indicated for other ailments and only those foods that are commonly indicated and suits the patient's constitution should be taken. Relax between two aasana-s or kriyaa-s to normalize the rate of respiration before starting the next aasana or kriyaa. If any pain or discomfort is felt at any time during the practice of any aasana or kriyaa it should be immediately discontinued. Barring a few, most of the yogaasana-s and yogik kriyaa-s should be practised on empty stomach, preferably in the morning. Apart from some aasana-s and kriyaa-s, which can be practiced at other times independently, please follow the sequence in which they appear unless otherwise indicated.

Symptoms: First and foremost hypertension may appear as a pain at the back of the head and neck on waking up in the morning. Other symptoms include difficulty in breathing, nervous tension, headache, dyspepsia, visibility of veins, perspiration, fatigue, ringing noise in ears, dizziness, inflammation of ankles, palpitation, increased heartbeat, frequent urination, aches and pain in the arms, shoulder region, leg, back and heart region, insomnia, anger and emotional distress.

Causes: The chief causes of high blood pressure are chronic dehydration, unbalanced food, sedentary life style, tension and stress. Hypertension is basically potassium-sodium imbalance in the body, where sodium level is high and potassium level is low. Smoking and an excessive intake of intoxicants, tea, coffee and refined foods destroy the natural functioning of the system and prevent the expulsion of waste and toxins from the body. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), obesity, severe constipation and diabetes lead to hypertension. Other causes are intake of painkillers and refined salt; food allergies and eating a high fat and low fibre diet.

Increase in cholesterol (LDL) is basically a hereditary disorder. Other causes include intake of rich and fried foods; excessive consumption of milk and dairy products such as ghee, butter, cheese, ice cream and cream; white flour (maidaa) products, sugar, cakes, pastries and biscuits; non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish and eggs; alcohol and cigarettes. Irregular habits and stress are also major causes. Cholesterol problems can also be caused by thyroid problems, especially in women, as they are eight times more prone to thyroid problems than men. Those with high cholesterol before taking medication must take a thyroid test.

General: Eight hours of sleep per day is a must. Have a daily walk of at least half an hour. Avoid overstrain, worries, tension, anger and haste. Listening to soothing classical raga-s (instrumental music) for half an hour daily is beneficial in normalising high blood pressure.

LAUGHTER THERAPY

Laughter helps control blood pressure by reducing stress related hormones and relaxing the body. Experiments have proved that there is a drop of 10-20 mm of Hg in blood pressure, after participating in a ten-minute laughter therapy session. Those who laugh are healthier because laughing helps them loosen up. Though it causes the pulse initially to quicken, it slows down considerably, so that blood pressure sinks. Since it is known to increase oxygen supply and relax skeletal muscles resulting in better blood circulation, laughter can control the progress of a heart disease. Laughter also reduces the chances of formation of clots. One should laugh whole-heartedly without any inhibition for at least half an hour daily.

JALA CHIKITSAA

(Hydropathy / Water Therapy)

Water prevents and cures high blood pressure. Hypertension is a state of adaptation of the body to a generalized drought, when there is not enough water to fill all the blood vessels that diffuse water into vital cells. As part of the mechanism of reverse osmosis, when water from the blood serum is filtered and injected into important cells through minute holes in their membranes, extra pressure is needed for the “injection process”. Just as we inject I.V. “water” in hospitals, so the body injects water into tens of trillions of cells all at the same time. Diuretics or beta blockers that are prescribed for hypertension further dehydrate the body. They are slow poisons that surely and prematurely kill. Water intake will bring blood pressure back to normal!

Water lowers blood cholesterol. High cholesterol levels are an indicator of early drought management by the body. Cholesterol is a clay-like material that is poured in the gaps of some cell membranes to safeguard them against losing their vital water content to the osmotically more powerful blood circulating in their vicinity. Cholesterol, apart from being used to manufacture nerve cell membranes and hormones, is also used as a “shield” against water taxation of other vital cells that would normally exchange water through their cell membranes.

Only pure water and no other fluids can rectify dehydration completely. Please see Chapter 7 for details on water therapy procedure.

TAILA CHIKITSAA

(Oil Pulling / Swishing Therapy)

High blood pressure can be successfully treated by means of oil pulling therapy.

See Chapter 8 for details on procedure for oil pulling therapy.

Diet: Avoid all foods rich in cholesterol and saturated fats; all foods of animal origin including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, bacon, beaf; milk and dairy products such as ghee, butter, cheese, cream and ice cream; coconut oil and palm oil; white flour (maidaa) products; oily and fried foods; sugar and sugar products; cakes, pastries, biscuits, alcoholic beverages, smoking and tobacco products; tea and coffee; paapad-s, pickles and refined salt. Coffee increases blood pressure among people with hypertension. Limit the sweet dishes to sweets made from dates, honey or jaggery. Beta blockers such as atenolol, inderal and metaprolol used by hypertensive patients greatly increase the risk of diabetes, increase blood sugar in those already suffering from diabetes and also blunt warning symptoms when low sugar occurs. These need to be avoided completely or its use severely restricted. Avoid cholesterol medicines as they contain statin which weaken the muscles including the heart and none has been shown to stop heart attacks or strokes. Moreover statins slow the ability of skeletal muscles to repair and regenerate due to its anti-proliferative effects leading to cramping and fatigue and potentially myopathy. The drug inegy has a combination of the statin simvastatin and ezetimibe for those whose cholesterol cannot be controlled by one drug alone. This drug has not only failed to reduce cardiovascular problems, but has resulted in increased cancers and death from cancers.

Have a vegan diet, as it is the best for high blood pressure patients. Have a diet predominently consisting of fresh fruits such as pomegranate and vegetables especially those rich in calcium and potassium, such as green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, soya, dates, orange, raisins, whole grains, wheatbran, wheatgerm, lentils, beans, sunflower seeds and nuts. The diet should consist of 80% fruits and vegetables and 20% proteins. More than 50% of the diet should be uncooked and the rest should be steamed, baked, grilled, sautéed, stir-fried or roasted—never fried or deep-fried. Use oils such as corn, rice bran, safflower, soyabean and sesame that tend to lower the level of LDL. Use only natural unrefined sea salt in restricted quantity. It is slightly darkish in colour with minerals and feels damp or clumps in humidity. Rock salt is also least harmful. Have daily intake of honey. According to latest research a gluten-free vegan diet full of wild rice, corn, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, soybeans, nuts, sunflower seeds, fruits and vegetables lowers cholesterol level (LDL) and offers protection against strokes for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Gluten is the protein in wheat, barley and rye. There should be at least 2 to 3 litres of pure water intake daily. This quantity may have to be adjusted as the water loss may vary according to weather conditions and individual constitution and lifestyle. On an average, we lose 2.5 litres of water through various excretory processes daily.

NATURE CURE FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Prevention and Remedial Measures:

Ajvain, Holy Basil (Tulsi) and Spearmint Concentrate: Two drops of ajowain and one drop each of holy basil and spearmint concentrate should be mixed with 20 ml water. This is one dose. Take this twice a day. Please check the blood pressure every ten days and adjust the dosage accordingly. Google “Holy Lama Naturals—Vaishali Industries” for information regarding distributors of above concentrates.

Alfalfa (Rijaka): In the form of sprouted seeds, alfalfa softens the hardened arteries. Alfalfa sprouts can be added to salads, soups and sandwiches. Having tea made by boiling seeds and straining it is beneficial. However, over indulgence in alfalfa seeds or sprouts should be avoided as it may trigger SLE, a painful arthritis like condition.

Aloe Vera: Its potassium content maintains heart rhythm, thereby stabilizing blood pressure. The most potent variety of aloe vera is Aloe Barbadensis Miller. Aloe vera health drinks may be taken every morning on empty stomach. However, ensure that the drink has IASC (International Aloe Vera Science Council) seal.

Apple: Have an apple a day or drink its juice. It insures one against high blood pressure. The peel of an apple contains 5 times more vitamin A than its fleshy part.

Apricot (Khubaani / Zardaalu): It has blood pressure controlling property.

Avocado (Kulu Naaspati / Maakhanphal): Avocados contain 60% more potassium than bananas and therefore highly beneficial in controlling hypertension. However, those suffering from kidney failure or weak kidneys should avoid avocado due to its high potassium content.

Banana: Due to its high potassium content and low salt it is highly beneficial in controlling blood pressure. However, those suffering from kidney failure or weak kidneys should avoid banana due to its high potassium content.

Broccoli: Regular use of this vegetable is beneficial in controlling blood pressure. Broccoli and cabbage are particularly high in a chemical called glutamic acid which helps lower blood pressure.

Cantaloupe / Muskmelon / Rockmelon (Cucumis Melo): This melon is particularly high in potassium content. One fourth of a cantaloupe contains 800 to 900 milligrams of potassium, roughly 20 percent of the recommended daily value.

Celery (Ajvain Kaa Pattaa): Celery should be used in regular diet for its beneficial effect in lowering blood pressure.

Chestnut: It helps in controlling blood pressure.

Choxi + / Choxi Plus (Dark and bitter chocolate): This particular brand of dark chocolate contains twenty times more flavonol antioxidants than blue berries. Just two squares of this chocolate provide the same amount of flavonol antioxidants as one pound of brussels sprouts or five pounds of apples. It protects the body from blood vessels clogging free radicals. It is beneficial in lowering blood pressure. This brand of chocolate is manufactured in England and currently only available there. In fact any dark chocolate with more than 70% cocoa will be as effective. However, dark chocolate that is not bitter is devoid of beneficial flavanol antioxidants. Chocolate still contains calories and fat and therefore should not be taken in excess of 6 grams or about a square a day. Milk chocolate typically has only 15% to 25% cocoa.

Cranberry: Drinking cranberry juice can lower blood pressure. Cranberries contain oligomeric procyanidins that can boost the health of blood vessels, helping to prevent vessel constriction-a leading cause of high blood pressure. However, it should be consumed in limited quantities, as its excessive use can cause one to put on weight, diarrhea, dental caries and indigestion.

Cucumber: A glass of cucumber juice should be taken twice a day. The potassium content in cucumber regulates blood pressure and promotes flexibility in muscles.

Moringa Oleifera / Drumstick (Saajan-ki-phalli / Shevgaa): Drumstick as well as its leaves are excellent for prevention and treatment of high blood pressure. Scientific research confirms that the leaves of drumstick tree are a powerhouse of nutritional value. They should be especially consumed for their potassium, calcium and magnesium content, as these minerals are highly beneficial in treating hypertension. The potassium content helps in maintaining the sodium-potassium balance, which is vital for normalizing blood pressure. In fact just the consumption of dried powdered leaves of drumstick tree is enough to normalize blood pressure without the need for any medicine. Gram for gram, moringa leaves contain: Seven times the vitamin C in oranges, FOUR times the calcium in milk, four times the vitamin A in carrots, two times the protein in milk, three times the iron of spinach, THREE times the potassium in bananas as well as significant quantities of magnesium, selenium and zinc and a good balance of all essential amino acids. Protein quality of drumstick leaves rivals that of milk and eggs. Also, the leaves can be easily dried into powder form for use as a nutritional supplement in sauces / chutney, soups, vegetables etc. Dried leaves have been found to be nutritionally more valuable than the fresh ones with some nutritional values enhanced ten times! Use drumstick leaves liberally in the daily diet, preferably in dried powdered form. About 25 ml juice of fresh leaves or one or two spoons of powdered dried leaves with daily meals would be highly beneficial. It should be taken mixed with food and not on empty stomach. However, those suffering from kidney failure or weak kidneys should avoid drumstick leaves due to its high potassium content.

Fig (Anjeer): It aids in blood pressure control.

Fruit Juices: Regular intake of a mixture of apple, carrot, mango and pear juice reduces blood pressure, fights oxidization, counteracts toxicity and clears body heat. Juices of grapes and oranges are also similarly beneficial. Oranges apart from being rich in antioxidants is also rich in potassium. However, orange should be avoided in case of stomach upset.

Garlic: About 3 or 4 medium size raw garlic cloves should be taken with every meal. It slows down the pulse rate and relieves the symptoms of dizziness, numbness and shortness of breath.

Grapefruit: Although its juice is useful in preventing high blood pressure its pulp is more preferable. Grapefruit or pomelo is an ideal way to flush out sodium. It furnishes the patient’s body with essential nutrients and minerals, particularly potassium. It contains no sodium.

Grapes: Consuming grapes or its fresh juice is beneficial in controlling blood pressure.

Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis): It improves the endothelial function. The flavonoids in green tea relax the cells called the endothelium, which is a thin layer on the inside of the blood vessels that smoothes the flow of blood allowing a more efficient circulation. Green tea is a rich source of antioxidant called polyphenols. Polyphenols scavenge cell-damaging free radicals. The polyphenols in green tea possess 20 to 30 times the antioxidant potency of vitamins C and E. Green tea is also the source of anti-oxidant called epigallocatechin that is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E. Green tea is highly beneficial in lowering blood pressure. Have 4 to 6 cups of green tea daily.

Indian Goosberry (Amla): A tablespoon each of fresh amla juice and honey mixed together should be taken every morning. It is very effective in controlling high blood pressure.

Kiwi Fruit: It is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E and fibre and therefore beneficial in controlling high blood pressure.

Lemon: Liberal use of lemon juice as well as its peel is beneficial in controlling blood pressure. It helps in maintaining capillary fragility.

Mushroom (Tila Chhattoo): Due to its high potassium content it reduces blood pressure. An average-size portabella mushroom has as much potassium as a serving of orange juice or a banana. White button variety has more protein, potassium, copper and selenium than oyster or shitake mushrooms.

Nuts—mixed: Almonds, pistachios, hazel nuts, peanuts and walnuts are great stress busters. Walnuts help replace those stress-depleted B vitamins, and almonds boost vitamin E, which helps fight cellular damage linked to chronic stress. It is beneficial in high blood pressure. Have a handful of mixed nuts daily. Buy nuts in the shell and think of it as multitasking: With every squeeze of the nutcracker, a little tension is released. Avoid nuts that have been heavily processed, especially ones that are salted with flavorings. These additives significantly reduce the nutritional benefits of the nuts.

Olive Oil (Extra Virgin) / Drumstick Seed Oil: About one or two tablespoons of olive oil (extra virgin) per day as a cooking medium or in any other form or taken directly can reduce blood pressure, both systolic as well diastolic, by as much as 7 and 5 points on an average. Oil from the seed of drumstick (Moringa Oliefera) tree also has all the benefits of olive oil.

Parsley: Parsley is very useful in high blood pressure. It helps maintain the blood vessels. Parsley can be taken as a beverage by simmering 20gms of fresh parsley leaves gently in 250 ml of water for a few minutes. Drink this several times a day.

Passion Fruit: It helps reduce blood pressure.

Peaches (Arhoo): Due to its high potassium content, its consumption helps in prevention and treatment of high blood pressure.

Pistachio: Naturally sodium free, pistachios contain more than 260 milligrams of potassium per 25 gram serving, along with other minerals that help maintain blood pressure.

Plums and Prunes: Plums and especially its dried version, prunes, being high in potassium, they maintain blood pressure levels. Look for California prunes as they have no sugar added. However, they should be avoided in case of kidney and bladder disorders, especially stone problem, as they contain oxalates.

Potato: Have potatoes boiled with the skin for lowering blood pressure. It absorbs less salt. Potatoes are rich in potassium and not sodium salts. Moreover magnesium present in potato is also beneficial.

Rice: Always have brown / unpolished rice. Rice has low-fat, low-cholesterol and low-salt content and is very good for people suffering from high B.P. who have been advised salt-restricted diet. Brown rice in particular, having calcium, soothes and relaxes the nervous system and helps relieve high blood pressure symptoms.

Seaweed: Seaweed and other sea vegetables should be liberally used for its high concentration of calcium and potassium, which is beneficial in treating this disease.

Tomato: It lowers blood pressure due to its potassium content as well as all kinds of protective antioxidants. Organic tomatoes are even better. Daily consumption of tomatoes reduces the systolic blood pressures (the top number) by 10 points on average, and diastolic blood pressures (the bottom number) by four points in just eight weeks in case of mild hypertension.

Vegetable Juices: About 300ml.Carrot juice mixed with 200ml.spinach (paalak) juice of which 250ml. each should be taken twice a day in the morning and evening. 100-ml.beetroot (chukandar) juice also can be added to this proportionately reducing spinach juice. About 500 ml of beetroot juice per day lowers resting blood pressure.

Vinegar (Balsemic): Acetic acid, the main component of vinegar, helps control blood pressure. Vinegar is a fat buster and health promoter. New research bolsters evidence that acetic acid fights fat by turning on genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes. The genes churn out proteins involved in breaking down fats, thus suppressing body fat accumulation in the body. Obesity is one of the major causes of high blood pressure.

Watermelon: Its seeds, dried and roasted, should be taken in liberal quantities for its beneficial potassium content. Watermelon contains citrulline, which converts to arginine. Arginine is an amino acid that is very helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure. Citrulline, the precursor to arginine, is found in higher concentrations in the rind of watermelons than the flesh. It should be used in the daily diet.

Wheat Grass: The daily use of chlorophyll is the most beneficial and accepted method of treatment for high blood pressure. It is efficient in reducing blood pressure and it enhances the capillaries. It is highly beneficial for the vascular system. Fresh wheat grass juice should be taken on empty stomach in the morning. It should be taken slowly and allowed to mix very well with saliva. No food or drink should be taken for the next one hour. Alternatively, wheat grass can be well masticated and eaten. About hundred grams of wheat grass or hundred ml of wheat grass juice should be taken. For old or serious illness start with fifty ml juice and slowly increase the quantity to 300 ml. After recovery, continue the intake of 50 ml juice to maintain good health. It is a highly effective treatment. Positive effect can be experienced in twenty-one days of starting the treatment.

NATURE CURE FOR HIGH BLOOD CHOLESTEROL (LDL)

Prevention and Remedial Measures:

Almond (Badaam): Regular intake of almonds is effective in reducing blood cholesterol by as much as 14% and promoting good cholestrol. Have about a handful of nuts per day. Avoid nuts that have been heavily processed, especially ones that are salted with flavorings. These additives significantly reduce the nutritional benefits of the nuts. Mammro almonds are preferable. However, over indulgence should be avoided as it is high in calories.

Aloe Vera: It has beneficial effects on cholesterol levels, reducing bad cholesterol level and at the same time increasing good cholesterol level. The most potent variety of aloe vera is Aloe Barbadensis Miller. Aloe vera health drinks may be taken every morning on empty stomach. However, ensure that the drink has IASC (International Aloe Vera Science Council) seal.

It is beneficial in lowering cholesterol (LDL) level. This brand of chocolate is manufactured in England and currently only available there. In fact any dark chocolate with 70% cocoa will be as effective. However, dark chocolate that is not bitter is devoid of beneficial flavanol antioxidants. Chocolate still contains calories and fat and therefore should not be taken in excess of 6 grams or about a square a day. Milk chocolate typically has only 15% to 25% cocoa.

Cinnamon (Daalchini) and Honey: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of cinnamon powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, when taken, reduce the level of cholesterol in blood by 10% within two hours. If taken three times a day any chronic cholesterol is cured. Pure honey, when taken with food daily, also gives relief from high blood cholesterol. However, excessive use of cinnamon should be avoided, as it may be harmful to the kidneys and the bladder. Pregnant women should avoid it, as it may cause miscarriage. Persons of hot constitution (pitta prakriti) should also avoid its excessive use, as it may cause headache. Generally this should be taken during winter months and avoided during summer months if it increases heat in the body.

It has been found in experiments, to be effective in maintaining a healthy circulatory system.

Garlic: Three fresh garlic cloves a day, not only lower (LDL) cholesterol by as much as 15%, but also raise good (HDL) cholesterol by as much as 23%. Whether raw or cooked, both ways it is equally effective.

Ginger: Ginger is believed to aid in the circulatory system and it has been used by many who take ginger for this very purpose. Ginger seems to improve the body's ability to sweat and help circulation.

Grapefruit: A natural pectin found in grapefruit helps to decrease the level of LDL cholesterol in the blood. A flavonoid called naringenin found in grapefruit and all citrus fruits corrects the rise in triglyceride and cholesterol levels. About 300 to 350 grams of grapefruit pulp, the segments with membranes and tiny juice sacs, eaten daily, lowers cholesterol by as much as 10%, as well as dissolves plaque or reverse formation already clogging the arteries. The juice of this fruit doesn’t have any effect.

Green Tea: It improves the endothelial function. The flavonoids in green tea relax the cells called the endothelium, which is a thin layer on the inside of the blood vessels that smooths the flow of blood allowing a more efficient circulation. Green tea is a rich source of antioxidant called polyphenols. Polyphenols scavenge cell-damaging free radicals, which cause LDL cholesterol to form artery clogging plaque. The polyphenols in green tea possess 20 to 30 times the antioxidant potency of vitamins C and E. Liberal use of onion in daily diet, in any form such as raw, boiled or fried is highly beneficial and equally effective.

Orange: Intake of 2 to 4 oranges a day lowers LDL cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol in the blood. However, orange juice should be avoided in case of stomach upset.

Peanut: Being a rich source of niacin, one ounce of peanut and peanut butter raises HDL by 20-35% most effectively and lowers LDL by 14%.

Pistachios (Pista): The mono-unsaturated fat contained in pistachios lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the good cholesterol (HDL). Just a handful of pistachios can lower blood lipid levels. Avoid nuts that have been heavily processed, especially ones that are salted with flavorings. These additives significantly reduce the nutritional benefits of the nuts.

Plums and Prunes: Regular use of plums, especially its dried version, prunes, lowers the level of (LDL) cholesterol. In case of bladder and kidney disorders, especially stone problems, avoid plums and prunes, as they contain oxalates.

Pumpkin Seeds: Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterols, compounds that reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.

Safflower (Kardi) Oil: This oil being the next best after olive oil is highly beneficial in lowering (LDL) cholesterol.

Sesame (Til): It has the highest phytosterol content, a compound that helps in lowering cholesterol. Sesame can be taken by adding it to anything.

Soyabeans: Due to its lecithin content, soyabeans are one of the best foods that help lower (LDL) cholesterol. Soyabean or tofu reduces total cholesterol level by as much as 30%, lowers LDL by 40%, lowers triglyceride levels, reduces the tendency of platelets to form blood clots and even raises HDL. Lecithin in soyabean is better than that found in eggs.

Sunflower Seeds: Intake of sunflower seeds is valuable in lowering high blood cholesterol.

Tomato: Lycopene, the antioxidant red compound in tomato peel, prevents cholesterol buildup. Having two raw tomatoes before meals keep artery and heart problems at bay. Four weeks of daily tomato munching can increase good HDL cholesterol by 15 per cent.

Vitamins: Wheat germ and yeast containing high quantities of vitamin B6 is effective in reducing blood cholesterol. Vitamin E rich foods such as green tea, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, soyabean oil and sprouted seeds and grains also help reduce blood cholesterol. The ability of chlorophyll to combine with oxygen and its cleansing ability contributes much to the removal of foreign matter from the walls of the blood vessels, bringing the desired relief.

Certain herbs also help in reducing cholesterol.

Indian Bedellium / Guggulu (Balsamedendron Mukul / Commiphora Mukul): Guggulu is effective in case of high blood cholesterol (LDL). It is a potent lipid modulator. Guggulu reduces the raised serum cholesterol, triglycerides and has a virtue to increase the serum HDL-cholesterol. One should avoid alcohol and excessive exposure to sun during Guggulu treatment. Those of pitta prakriti (hot constitution) should sparingly use this herb. This herb is available in health-food stores, herbal medicine stores and other medical stores.

JALA CHIKITSAA

(Hydropathy / Water Therapy)

“Waters contain all disease-dispelling medicaments, useful for the upkeep of our body, so that we may live long to enjoy the bright sun. That there is ambrosia in waters, there is healing balm in them and there are medicinal herbs, know this all and by their proper use become wiser.” (Rgveda, 1: 23)

According to Atharveda Samhitaa, 1.4.4: “apsvantaramrtam”—“Within the waters is ambrosia.” 1.6.2: “apsu may somo abravit antarvishvaani bheshajaa”—“Within the waters, Soma told me, are all remedies.”

Water is one of the most essential nutrients of the human body. Water is an important structural component of skin, cartilage, tissues and organs. For human beings, every part of the body is dependent on water. Our body comprises about 75% water: the brain has 85%, blood is 90%, muscles are 75%, kidney is 82% and bones are 22% water. The functions of our glands and organs will eventually deteriorate if they are not nourished with good, pure water. Water keeps the body temperature regulated, protects vital organs, assists the digestive system, transports oxygen and nutrients and eliminates toxins and wastes from the body. Lack of water can cause dehydration, fatigue constipation, piles and other disease conditions.

Jala Chikitsaa or water therapy / hydropathy has been practiced in India and Japan since ancient times. Now modern scientific tests have proven its value and efficacy.

It is chronic unintentional dehydration that produces stress, chronic pains and many degenerative diseases. The greatest tragedy in medical history is the assumption that dry mouth is the only sign of the body’s water needs. A dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of our body’s water needs.

Symptoms of the body's deterioration begin to appear when the body loses 5% of its total water volume. In a healthy adult, this is seen as fatigue and general discomfort, whereas for an infant, it can be dehydrating. In an elderly person, a 5% water loss causes the body chemistry to become abnormal, especially if the percentage of electrolytes is overbalanced with sodium. One can usually see symptoms of aging, such as wrinkles, lethargy and even disorientation. Continuous water loss over time will speed up aging as well as increase risks of diseases.

The most common diseases (for which there are a variety of names such as asthma, arthritis, hypertension and so on) are really just names given to patterns of symptoms created by the body's drought management system. When the human body begins to get dehydrated, it initiates a drought management system that seeks to conserve water. The symptoms characterized by this drought management effort are given disease names by conventional medicine and then treated with toxic prescription drugs.

If our body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from our bloodstream, which will make our heart work harder. At the same time, the kidneys cannot purify blood effectively. When this happens, some of the kidney's workload is passed on to the liver and other organs, which may cause them to be severely stressed. Additionally, we may develop a number of minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infection, coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, and headaches.

The brain is 85% water and must be kept hydrated at all times. So the body, when it is lacking water, will do everything possible to keep supplying adequate water to the brain. This involves limiting the loss of water in other areas of the body. Simply breathing causes the loss of a significant quantity of water every day, depending on the climate in which we live and our level of physical exercise.

If we are experiencing chronic dehydration from not drinking enough water, or from drinking water-depleting drinks such as coffee, beer or beverages containing sugar, our body tries to prevent respiratory water loss by producing histamines which close off the capillaries in our lungs. Through the constriction of these capillaries, water loss is reduced, but of course breathing is made far more difficult. It's important to understand that the body is doing this on purpose. The body is producing histamines as a strategy, not as a disease or something gone awry. The body wants to constrict the capillaries in our lungs because it is trying to save our brain.

What is conventional medicine's answer to this production of histamines by the body? Well, of course, it is the prescription of antihistamines, or drugs that are designed to counteract the histamines produced on purpose by the body in order to conserve water. These antihistamines then open up the capillaries in the lungs, making breathing seem easier. As we can see here, then, the conventional medicine approach treats nothing but the symptoms, and in doing so it counteracts the body's own intentions and strategies in trying to conserve water. What patients with asthma really need is lots of water on a regular basis, not histamine prescription drugs.

The same sort of destructive cycle of medical treatment is taking place with other diseases as well—most notably hypertension and arthritis. Many of the prescription drugs profitably marketed to doctors and patients today are, in effect, various forms of histamines, which counteract the body's efforts to conserve water.

What we need to be doing, of course, is simply drinking more water.

Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D., has done more than 20 years of extensive clinical and scientific research on water therapy and is the foremost authority on the relationship between the consumption of water and states of health or disease in the human body. In his book, “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water”, he has explained scientifically that at the molecular level it is water that regulates all functions of the body including functions of soild matter. It is water that energizes and activates the solid matter. If we don’t take enough water some functions of our body will suffer. His research has revealed that it is chronic unintentional dehydration that produces stress, chronic pains and many degenerative diseases. The greatest tragedy in medical history, in his opinion, is the assumption that dry mouth is the only sign of the body’s water needs. According to him a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of our body’s water needs. Only pure water and no other fluids can rectify dehydration completely.

Many people through their personal experiences, including Dr. Julian Whitaker, M.D., Dr. Cheryl Brown Christopher, M.D., Dr. Jose A. Rivera, M.D., whose asthma was cured permanently by water therapy and other medical professionals, have endorsed his work. His other books on water therapy include, “Water for Health, For Healing, For Life” and “Water Cures; Drugs Kill”. Another professional, Dr. Joey Shulman-DC, RNCP- has also authored the book “You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty” on water therapy.

Water Therapy Procedure:

First calculate the individual rehydration requirement. Body weight in kilograms multiplied by 35 milliliters will give the Standard Total Pure Water requirement per 24 hours (Wt. in Kg. x 35 mls.).

In ADDITION to the daily Standard Pure Water requirement, for any quantity of tea, coffee, alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages and all beverages containing refined sugar that is consumed during the day, one and a half times of that quantity of pure water should be consumed. These fluids are diuretic as well as it induces sweating (the hot drinks) so one loses more water than one takes in with these beverages. Ideally these beverages should be completely avoided.

This brings up the total pure water requirement for 24 hours. (Other fluids such as milk / juices do not count for supplementing pure water requirement, because being foods, the body responds very differently to them as compared to pure water.) Add to this 1 gram or ¼ teaspoon of unrefined sea salt for every litre of water consumed per day to balance the water intake. This quantity of water needs to be consumed during the period from waking up until we go to bed. In a few hours / days / weeks the health condition starts to improve.

The rehydration protocol for adults:

About 2 or 3 glasses of water (1 glass = 250 mls) should be taken on waking in the morning before even washing the face. There is a huge gap between going to bed and waking up when no water is consumed and at the same time there is a considerable loss of water through bladder movement and respiration. To compensate this loss there is a need to take this quantity of water in the morning. If need be warm water can be taken. In case of weak kidneys or kidneys functioning below its capacity, smaller quantity should be taken. Do not eat or drink anything for the next one hour. One glass of water should be taken an hour before meals. No water should be taken during meals and for 2 hours after meals. The rest of the daily quota of water can be taken at regular intervals throughout the day.

In the case of people who have water-retention / edema, a temporary salt restriction in food along with placing a pinch of unrefined sea salt on the tongue twice a day along with gradual increase of water helps in a few days to clear up such chronic conditions. The salt on tongue seems to get the brain to reorder the body's potassium-sodium-water balance when there is adequate availability of free water in the body. With the improved condition the need for diuretics and their attendant ill-effects can be eliminated.

We lose about 2.5 litres of water on an average daily through various excretory processes including perspiration, breathing, bladder movement etc. This loss may increase or reduce depending on the weather condition and the individual constitution and lifestyle. So drinking pure water is safe.

Chapter 8

TAILA CHIKITSAA

(Oil Pulling / Swishing Therapy)

Oil pulling therapy is an ancient therapy that is prescribed by Ayurveda. The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from the body through the saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.

Now Dr. Karach has introduced this amazing but simple therapy to the western world. Dr. F. Karach, M.D., presented a paper on oil pulling therapy before the All-Ukrainian Association. Oncologists and bacteriologists belonging to the Academy of Science of the USSR attended the meeting. Dr. Karach explained the unusual simple healing process using cold-pressed oils.

The benefit of this therapy is that it heals the whole body. It has a stimulating effect on the body’s eliminatory system. Through this therapy it is possible to heal individual cells, cell conglomerates such as lymph nodes and more complex tissues such as internal organs simultaneously. This occurs because the beneficial microflora throughout the body are provided with a healthy continuum. In this way it is possible to heal cells, tissue and all organs simultaneously; the body itself gets rid of toxic waste without disturbing the healthy microflora. Dr. Karach says human beings are living only half their life span. They could potentially live healthy to be 140 to 150 years old. Without this natural bodily intrusive element evinced by the microflora the usual pattern of human health tends to lean towards illness rather than wellness.

During the oil pulling / swishing process one's metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health. One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.

The oil pulling / swishing is done best first thing in the morning before brushing the teeth. To accelerate the healing process and detox faster, it can be done upto thrice a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.

The method:

First thing in the morning, before brushing the teeth, take one tablespoon oil (either sunflower or sesame oil) in the mouth but do not swallow it. Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars. Move the oil slowly in the mouth as in rinsing or swishing. Sip, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth for fifteen to twenty minutes. Do not gargle in the throat. This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. But inadvertently if you swallow there is nothing to worry. It will be eliminated through bowel movement. Nevertheless it is better to avoid swallowing it as some may experience diarrhea, headache or throat irritation if swallowed. As the process continues, the oil gets thin, white and foamy. The oil thins out after a few minutes because saliva is constantly being mixed in and swished about. If the oil is still yellow, it was not swished long enough. After moving the oil in the mouth spit it out in the toilet and flush it out. The oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly. Just use normal tap water and good old fingers to clean. After this one can do the normal brushing of the teeth. This should be followed by drinking 2 to 3 glasses of water. After oil pulling practice at other times one glass of water is enough.

In case of insomnia, safflower oil, found to be more effective, can be used for oil swishing before bedtime. One should wait for at least four hours after meals or one hour after a drink to practice this therapy if one wants to practice it at other times apart from early morning.

The old school says that sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results. However, other oils have been found equally effective. If one is allergic to a particular brand of oil, the brand of oil or the oil itself should be changed to different oil. Cold pressed oil is preferred, but refined oil is also effective.

Note: A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease / ailment is being cured. Oil Pulling should not be stopped if one feels aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. The body is healing. Dental fillings falling out is highly unlikely unless there is pre-existing damage or loose fillings.

WHEAT GRASS

Nutritional Value of Wheat Grass: Chlorophyll is the first product of light and, therefore, contains more light energy than any other element. Chlorophyll has the ability to capture the sun's energy and lock it into plants in such a way that we can use it to sustain our own lives. Wheatgrass Juice is one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available and contains nearly 70% of chlorophyll. Its chlorophyll is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by humans. If grown in organic soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 102 minerals from the soil. Tender wheat grass is the richest source of amino acids and flavonoids. It also contains vitamins, nutrients, active enzymes, agropyrene and apigenin. Wheat grass also has abundant antibiotic, anti-oxidant, anti-radiation and anti-inflammatory properties. Wheatgrass juice protein is the optimal form of protein. Nutritional value of approximately 2.5 pounds of fresh vegetables is equivalent to one ounce of fresh wheat grass juice. Wheatgrass is a complete whole food with enzymes, over 18 amino acids, phytochemicals, vitamins and chlorophyll working in perfect harmony to help rid the body of toxins and creating overall good health.

Chemically, chlorophyll is almost identical to haemoglobin—the substance that transports oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body. Out of about 50 atoms in the compound, only two are different. The main difference is that at the centre of chlorophyll there is a magnesium ion, whereas haemoglobin has iron in the same place.

A study at the University of California showed that wheatgrass contains an enzyme (P4D1) capable of repairing faulty DNA. The best part is that it has 'live enzymes'. Each enzyme performs a specific function within the body in conjunction with other enzymes and they control all the bodily functions. Enzymes also have a deterrent ability against cancerous cells.

The three most important effects of wheatgrass on the human body are: blood purification, liver detoxification and colon cleansing. This is because wheat grass juice is the richest source of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, sodium, sulphur and 18 forms of amino acids. According to Dr Bernard Jensen, it only takes a few minutes to digest wheat grass juice and doing so uses up very little of the body's energy.

Wheat grass juice contains the following:

Basic Nutrients: Carbohydrates, glucose, dietary fibre, choline, fats, protien and chlorophyll

Minerals: Potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, suphur, cobalt, zinc and selenium

Vitamins: A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, E, K and folic acid

Wheat grass juice successfully treats more than 350 diseases including cancer in general and leukemia in particular. In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize strep infections, heal wounds, overcome inflammation, get rid of parasitic infections, hasten skin grafting, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores and reduce typhoid fever.

Dr. Chris Reynolds, M.B.B.S., Australia: “Based on comprehensive scientific evidence and my own numerous clinical observations (>35,000) since 1995, wheatgrass and other cereal grasses appear to be capable of stimulating the activity of human growth factors. This process in turn facilitates the natural healing process in hemostasis and hemolysis, wound healing, fracture healing, and numerous other situations.”

Method of Growing Wheat Grass, extracting its Juice and its Consumption:

A few kernels of wheat, seven pots and patience is all you need to produce wheat grass.

a. Take seven large wooden boxes or earthen containers to grow wheat grass for one individual. The mouth of the container should be at least one square foot.

b. Fill ¾th of the container with black soil and 1/4th with natural manure (compost). Avoid chemical fertilizers.

c. Take 100gms of good variety of wheat seeds for one basin, and soak it for 12 to 14 hours.

d. Put the soaked grains in a wet cloth and tie it. The wheat grains will then start sprouting.

e. Sow the sprouted wheat grains in the pot daily, that is, pot 1- day 1, pot 2-day 2 and so on.

f. Sprinkle water in the pot once or twice every 24hrs. Don’t pour water, as excess water hinders growth of wheat grass. Keep it away from the direct rays of the sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

g. You will get wheat grass of 5 to 6 inches in a week during summer and more than a week during winter.

h. On day 8, the grass from pot 1 should either be pulled out or should be cut with scissors.

i. Once the wheat is harvested, remove the soil from the pot and dry it in the sun. Sunlight helps the earth regain its energy. Add some compost and put the soil back into the pot to regrow the wheat grass.

j. The juice should be prepared from pot 1 on day 8, pot 2 on day 9, and so on.

Extracting Juice-the Process:

Wash the harvested wheat grass. Sprinkle some water on it and pound it, preferable with a mortar and pestle, or blend it in a food processor. Drain and drink immediately. Another method is to simply chew the washed grass and spit out the fibre. This is nutritious, but time consuming.

Consumption:

Wheat grass juice should be had immediately after preparing it. Wheat grass juice is best taken on an empty stomach. Don’t consume anything for an hour after that. Sip gradually. Let the juice mix well with saliva. Don’t gulp it all down in one go.

Start with 25-50 ml juice, diluted with 15-25ml water. Gradually increase the juice in take, and cut down on the water content. If you go gung-ho and drink the undiluted juice from 100gms of wheat grass, there will be side effects like nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, cold and fever. However, these symptoms will gradually disappear. Upto 300 ml wheat grass juice can be taken per day.

Don’t add anything to the wheat grass juice to improve its taste. This is very important.

An exclusive diet of wheat grass can be used beneficially in treating diseases. In adopting this mode of treatment, the patient should undertake fast on wheat grass for seven days. Such a fast can pleasantly cleanse and nourish at the same time. Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body. One can be confident of complete safety and real health.

Wheat grass juice protects from dangerous chemicals. It can help remove heavy metal toxins from the body. It can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases haemoglobin production. An ounce of wheatgrass juice in a gallon of fluoridated water turns the fluorine into harmless calcium-phosphate-fluoride compound. Used in wash water it adds softness to the face and hands. It is also a great skin cleanser and can be poured into the bath water for a soothing and a refreshing soak. It stops bleeding, itching, and helps sores and pimples to heal. It makes an exceptional vegetable wash for detoxifying produce that is not organically grown. Fruits and vegetables contaminated by insecticide and pesticide sprays can be thoroughly cleaned and the negative food transformed by wash water mixed with an ounce of wheatgrass juice or washing with water in which wheat grass has been placed.

This is hard work, indeed, but try wheat grass juice tonic for 21 days, and see your body glow with health.

RECIEPES

1) Power-Packed Health Salad

Ingredients: Tomato, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, carrot, beetroot (steamed), cabbage (green / red – steamed), capsicum (green / red / yellow / orange), radish, spring onion, spring garlic, olive, mint, coriander leaves and alfalfa sprouts. All these should be finely chopped. Add sprouted green gram (Phaseolus aureus / Mung), lemon juice and olive oil to this salad. Use only those vegetables that are in season. Over indulgence in alfalfa seeds or sprouts should be avoided as it may trigger SLE, a painful arthritis like condition.

2) Healthy Green Sauce / Chutney (to replace unhealthy, salty and oily pickles)

Ingredients: Fresh grated coconut, finely chopped mint and coriander leaves; ginger, garlic, green chillies and a little natural unrefined sea salt (It is slightly darkish / grayish in colour with minerals and feels damp or clumps in humidity. Strictly avoid refined salt. Even rock salt / sindhav namak is a better alternative). It should be properly blended in a blender. Lemon juice should be added according to individual taste. This green sauce can be added to the salad as salad dressing instead of rich sauces and dressing.
