N.E MP’s to discuss peaceful development in the region

SHILLONG: Members of Parliament from the Northeast will meet in Gangtok on February 12 and 13 for a two-day brain storming session on how to usher in development in the backward region through peaceful means.

Announcing this at the concluding function of the two-day 12th North-East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA) Conference here, Assam Assembly Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai today said the NERCPA forum has unanimously resolved that the Centre and NE states, which are affected by insurgency, should initiate discussion with ultra groups.

“They should negotiate with insurgent groups in the North East region to bring them to the mainstream for permanent peace, harmony and tranquility as well as to ensure socio-economic development in the interest of the people of the region in particular and the nation as a whole,” Rai, who formally handed over chairmanship of the NERCPA to Meghalaya Speaker Charles Pyngrope said.

Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim P D Rai said the session at Gangtok would be held under the chairmanship of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister and now Rajya Sabha member Mukut Mithi.

“All MPs from the N-E will come together as a unified caucus on common issues in the region,” he said.
