BHUTAN: Bhutan Chamber of Commerce to host 5-day trade fair

4 January, 2010 - About 86 firms and companies from India and Bhutan are expected to participate in the Bhutan-India friendship trade fair in the border town of Gelephu from January 8-12.

Of the participants, 25 will be from northeast India, 20 from Bhutan and the rest from other parts from India.

This fair will primarily focus on the micro, small and medium enterprises from Bhutan, Sikkim and the seven-sister states of India for participation. Business units, which are unable to exhibit, can avail the display business promotional banners at a nominal fee, according to officials of the Bhutan chamber of commerce and industry.

Seminars on the B2B business market development model, launch of rural products and services, awareness programs on health, social and environmental issues, demonstrations on management and operation of agro-forestry and backyard farms for the rural folk and cross border cultural exchange have also been planned.

“It’s more than just a mere business fair. It gives an opportunity for cross-culture interaction to strengthen the relationship between the two countries,” said secretary general of BCCI, Phub Tshering.

The five-day fair with the theme of ‘enhancing cross-border partnership’ is the first of its kind in the south-central region. Gelephu was chosen as the venue, based on its strategic location, said Phub Tshering. “With hydro projects like Mangdechu, Punatsangchu and Chamkharchu coming up, Gelephu will become a gateway for the raw materials required, making her a potential economic hub,” he said.

BCCI, along with their border counterparts, are working closely for a wider representation and visitor turnout. The regional agency of the Bhutan-India friendship association (BIFA) is involved in the promotion of the event.
