: Good news for Sikkim. Patients with cardiovascular diseases (heart diseases) will no longer have to travel out of Sikkim for treatment.
Sikkim now can boast of its own Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon. Well-known Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Sudheer Deodatta Palkar, MBBS, MS, MS (CVTS) FIACS, has joined the Central Referral Hospital (CRH), Tadong, East Sikkim as a Consultant.
Sikkim now can boast of its own Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon. Well-known Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Sudheer Deodatta Palkar, MBBS, MS, MS (CVTS) FIACS, has joined the Central Referral Hospital (CRH), Tadong, East Sikkim as a Consultant.
Dr. Palkar has over 37 years of experience with over more than 7000 surgeries performed.
Having passed MBBS in 1973 from University of Bombay (King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai), MS, General surgery in 1976, Dr. Palkar did his MS Cardio Thoracic Surgery in 1979 (Seth G.S Medical College). In 1982, he was awarded fellowship in St. Vincent’s hospital Sydney, Australia to get expertisation in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) under the able guidance of Dr. Mark X. Shanahan & Dr. Victor P Chang and did about 100 CABG cases with about 400 grafts.
From 1983- 1998, he was the Consultant cardiac Surgeon Jaslok Hospital and research Centre, Mumbai.
Between 1986-2000, he was selected by American Board from Massachusetts General Hospital to work in P.D Hinduja & Research Centre. He got an opportunity to develop the cardio surgery department along with Dr. K.R Shetty (MD.USA). He was also the Consultant Cardio vascular and Thoracic Surgeon – Cumballa Hill Heart Institute and Research Centre, Mumbai.
He also worked in the Prince Sultan Kidney and Heart Centre and King Khalid Hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Aditya Birla Memorial hospital, Pune Raheja Fortis Hospital Mumbai.
Dr. Palkar has a vast range of experience in Open Heart surgeries especially, Coronary bypass Surgeries. He has performed Vascular surgery in abdominal and peripheral Vessels, Thoracic cases Lung-trachea-Esophagus-Pericardium and Permanent pacemaker implantation.
He has also performed rare surgeries like Mirror image Dextro Cardia with DORV (Double outlet right ventricle), Ebstein Anamoly with Dextro Cardia with TI (Tricuspid incompetence) and CCF (congestive cardiac failure), BENTLE’s procedure and partial Ectopia Cordis with DORV.
He has done extensive research in the open and closed heart surgeries and use of systemic pulmonary shunt employing PTFE grafts in management of cyanotic infants and babies.
His interests lie in Total Artificial hearts and Heart lung transplants.
CRH is all set to upgrade into a Super Specialty hospital and transform the Hospital into a regional hub of national repute. The Super Specialty wing of CRH will host 1.5 Tesla MRI, Cardiac CT, Cardiac Cath Lab, ventilators, monitors, state of art Anaesthesia machines and host of other diagnostic and therapeutic equipments. CRH has established specialties in urology, Neuro Surgery, Gastroenterology.
With the joining of Dr. Palkar, cardiology facilities at the Super Specialty wing of CRH is now operational. Open heart surgery would be now available in Sikkim.
