Earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude hits North East India

An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Assam and rest of the North East this evening but there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to properties. The quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck at 6.11pm. Mr. R F Dattatreya of Met Department in Delhi said, the epicentre of the quake was in Tezpur district of Assam.

AIR Correspondent reports, the earthquake, which lasted for about one minute, caused panic among the people, particularly, in the high-rise buildings in Guwahati city. In some buildings cracks have developed due to the tremor.

The earthquake was also felt in West Bengal. (AIR)
