Following the collapse of two multi-storey buildings in Gangtok in Sikkim on Friday, the state government on Saturday formed eight teams of engineers to study the structure of the weak buildings in the area.

A senior government official said, “Eight teams of engineers have started examining the structure of the buildings. As per the legal process, a notice will be served to the people to whom all these buildings belong. The buildings will be vacated and then demolished.”

Till the last reports came in, the engineers have identified four such building with weak structure in Gangtok city. “We will issue a notice tomorrow and the buildings will be vacated soon. After all the residents are evacuated from those buildings, we will pull down the structure,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army has deployed more than 100 troops of its special force for carrying out relief operations in North Sikkim as most of the parts of the area are still cut off from the rest of the state. The troopers would be taken to the inaccessible areas in North Sikkim by Mi-17 choppers, said a senior Army official. Today, over four sorties with 22 SF troops each were flown to Chungthang and from there they were sent to further locations.
