Sikkim registers record 83 percent voting
Gangtok, April 30 (IANS) Sikkim registered a record voter turnout of 83 percent Thursday as it held simultaneous assembly elections and balloting for its lone Lok Sabha seat in the third phase of the elections.The percentage Thursday is higher than the 82 percent registered in 1999. The figure had declined to 80 percent in 2004. Sikkim joined the Indian Republic in 1975.
In Thursday’s elections, the West district saw a total voting turnout of approximately 84.16 percent, South district a turnout of 82.38 percent, North district a voting turnout of 81 percent, while the East district witnessed 80 percent.
Chief Electoral Officer T.T. Dorjee said the elections in Sikkim, including for its 32 assembly constituencies, were a “smooth and peaceful affair”.
During the day at some places in the South and West districts, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) had to be changed due to technical malfunction, and due to the bad weather some polling officers could not reach their polling booths on time, delaying voting in some areas.
The CEO also stated here that as of now there were no negative reports from any of the presiding officers which meant that there was no question of re-polling in any of the polling stations.
