Sikkim gets two more ITIs

The state is likely to get two more industrial training institutes soon, one at Makha and the other at Gangtok.

A proposal was made by the Chief Minister a long time back to the Centre for setting up more ITI’s across the state. In that four such institutes were demanded in which two institutes were under central sponsor scheme and the other two one at Mangan and other at Nathang was demanded under public private partnership mode.

As per the information received from the Director Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), Department of Labour, Mr. PW Rinzing only the CSS ITI institute have received green signal and by the coming financial year the same is likely to be provided. In regards to the other two institutes he said that earlier the demand made by the State Government was under PPP mode but now the department has changed the same also to CSS due to which it may take some time.

The existing ITI institutes director CTS said that there are about 3 ITI institutes functioning across the state one each at Rangpo, Namchi and Gyalsing. Institute at Rangpo is under up gradation under World Bank. Under this scheme the infrastructure of the said institute is being upgraded along with the buildings, class room and hostel facilities and are expected to be complete by March 2011, similarly 100% equipments procurement has also been also completed. This institute provides training on 13 trades.

With regard to the other two existing institutes Mr. Rinzing said that the institute at Namchi and Gyalsing did not have it own building and were being operated in private buildings, recently funds have been received under CSS and the construction of the building for both the training institute is under progress.

The Namchi institute provides training on 8 trades and Gyalsing on 6 trades. While informing about the placement facility it was said that till date 100% placement have been reported in various private and public sectors as required and companies and industries operating across the state have already applied to Labour Department for more skilled man power. Adding further he said that Apprentice Act, 1961 has also been enforced in the state and under this act the private sector functioning in the state has to book skilled manpower in advance for further advance training or course and for the course or training the company has to bear the expenses and similarly the placement is also guaranteed
