Sikkim tourism will generate economic activities worth Rs 1500 crore per annum by the year 2020 said sikkim tourism minister Sh Shri Bhim Dhungel while speaking on the launch of 777 days of the incredible India Himalayas organized by ministry of tourism in hotel ashoka new delhi today .He said that economic activities worth Rs one crore was recorded under tourism trade in the year 1980 which was increased to 75 crore per annum in the year 2000 and 400 crore in the year 2010.and target has been fixed to generate economic activites of Rs 1500 crore by the year 2020. He said that target has been fixed to attract one lakh international tourists and 20 lakh domestic tourist in the state by the year 2020. He said that 12862 domestic and 2572 international tourist visited the state during the year 1980 which was increased to 170160 domestic and 8794 International tourist arrival in the year 2000 and added that 700011 domestic and 20757 international tourist have visited the state in the year 2010.He said that target has been fixed to attract one lakh international tourists and 20 lakh domestic tourist in the state by the year 2020 He said that state govt has decided to promote the tourism activities by Opening more areas for domestic & foreign tourists, Opening New Trekking routes, Crafting and enhancing major tourist circuits and undertaking aggressive Marketing at Global markets.He told that budhist circuits are being developed to promote religious tourism in the state and added that several international renowned budhist institutions are popular among the scholars from all over the world .

He said that state govt has given Thrust Sector status to tourism in the sikkim to achieve highest growth potential in this sector and ensure overall socio economic development in the state .He said that sikkim will be promoted as ultimate eco tourism destination in the country and added that home stay scheme has been launched in the state for providing clean and hygenic facilities to the tourists in homely atomosphere and added that different communities with their diverse customs ,culture,traditions,cuisine,fairs and festivals offers a unique experience to the visitors with warm hospitality . Sikkim eyes Rs.1,500 crore business from tourism annually

New Delhi, Sep 27 — Sikkim is aiming to generate tourism business worth Rs.1,500 crore perannum by 2020, a state minister said here Friday.
Tourism Minister Bhim Dhungel said the state's annual business from tourism leap-frogged to Rs. 400 crore in 2010 from Rs.75 crore in 2000. The figure was only Rs.1 crore in 1980.
"The target for generation of economic activities by the eyar 2020 from the sector has been fixed at Rs.1,500 crore per annum," Dhungel said at the launch of 777 days of the incredible India Himalayas organised by union tourism ministry here.
By 2020, the state aims to attract one lakh foreign tourists and 20 lakh domestic tourists annually.
Dhungel said 12,862 domestic and 2,572 international tourists visited the state in 1980. The number of domestic tourist arrivals shot up to 7,00,011, while the visitors from abroad rose to 20,757 in 2010.
To promote tourism, the state government has decided to create more tourist destinations, open new trekking routes, and undertake aggressive marketing.
The Buddhist circuits are also being developed to promote religious tourism in the state, Dhungel said.
"We will develop Sikkim as a principal tourism destination in South and South-East Asia by 2015," he added.

The Look East Policy (LEP) touted as the harbinger of change and prosperity to the North-Eastern Region (NER) of India, for all purpose and intent remains more on papers. The significance of Northeast India as a bridgehead between India and Southeast Asia is being increasingly realized by the policy makers in New Delhi. For a long time since independence, the security dimension dominated Indian thinking. As a result, Northeast India was perceived as aliability and a burden. However, in the context of the importance attached to “Look East Policy”, there is an increasing realization that if infra-structure development takes place, North East India could become a point of convergence among the dynamic economies of Southeast Asia, Southern China and India.
The seminar intends to study the composition of India-ASEAN trade in order to suggest the policy measures that will facilitate the changes in the production structure of the North Eastern Region in conformity with the demand structure of ASEAN which will lay a strong basis for trade between the region and the ASEAN.
The proposed seminar also seeks to assess the views of the ASEAN economic agents in relation to their prospects of economic engagement with the North Eastern Region.
It also aspires to investigate the nature of incentives that the federal and the state governments can device in order to transform the North- Eastern Region growth in the region.
This seminar also seeks to find out how the new policy thinking, the ‘Look East’ apparently intended to deliver India’s Northeast from its presently landlocked and peripheral status produces new geopolitical imaginaries that are not necessarily bound by the limits set forth by it.
Teachers and students from universities and colleges are most welcome.

25 Sep, Gangtok (RBPR) A delegation of around seventy two bikers from different parts of Maharastra, under the banner of ‘Poorvottar Bharat Maitri Abhiyan’,- a part of ‘ Shasakta Bharat Abhiyan’ led by Dr Sandeep Mahind , called on Shri Shriniwas Patil, the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, at Raj Bhawan on 25th September 2013.
Poorvotar Bharat Maitiri Abhiyan is an endeavour mandated under the ‘Shasakta Bharat Abhyian’, with the aim and objective of spreading the message of national integration, and honouring the martyrs of the north- eastern region, who have contributed in India’s struggle for freedom.
The team of motorcyclists had started from Kolkatta on 21st September, 2013 and arrived in Sikkim on 25th September 2013, and also visited Nathu la on the same day.
The group was accorded a warm welcome at a function organised in Raj Bhawan. During the course of interaction, Dr. Praveen Somani, President of the Rotary Club, Gangtok, made a welcome speech. Thereafter, the gathering was addressed by the group leader of the biker’s delegation, Dr. Mahind. He highlighted the objectives and activities of his organisation. On behalf of the entire delegation, Dr. Mahind also thanked the Hon’ble Governor for having spared his precious time.

Sikkim has maximum unemployed; Chhattisgarh lowest: Report

CHANDIGARH: With country's unemployment rate estimated to be at 4.7 per cent, Sikkim found to be having maximum unemployment rate while Chhattisgarh had the lowest unemployment rate across the country.
In its latest Annual Employment & Unemployment Survey report for 2012-13 released by labour bureau under union ministry of labour and employment here today, Sikkim state had the maximum unemployed people in the country.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has liberalized branch authorisation policy. To open branches in Tier 1 to Tier 6 centres and in the rural, semi-urban and urban centres in North-Eastern States and Sikkim without having the need to take permission from Reserve Bank of India in each case, subject to reporting.
"At least 25% of the total number of branches opened during the financial year, must be opened in unbanked rural (Tier 5 and Tier 6) centres, i.e. centres which do not have a brick and mortar structure of any scheduled commercial bank for customer based banking transactions," the central bank said.
While, the total number of branches opened in Tier 1 centres during the financial year cannot exceed the total number of branches opened in Tier 2 to 6 centres and all centres in the North Eastern States and Sikkim, it said.

The first greenfield airport in Sikkim at Pakyong will be completed by December 2014, which will provide air connectivity to the land locked state, Bhim Prasad Dhungel, Minister for Tourism, Government of Sikkim said yesterday, the PTI reported.
The Pakyong airport, being built at an altitude of 4,700 feet, will be one of the five highest airports in India. The reinforcement wall on the project is 80 metre in height, which is one of the tallest reinforcement walls in the world, Dhungel told Dr K Chiranjeevi, Minster of State with Independent Charge for Tourism, Government of India, in New Delhi, official sources said. He said that construction work on the Rs 300-crore airport being constructed by Airports Authority of India on 200 acre land is in full swing and added that operation of flights from the airport will be commissioned by March 2015. Dhungel said that the airport having 180-metre-long airstrip will facilitate landing of ATR-72 plane. Presently, the nearest airport to Sikkim is located 124 km away at Bagdogra in West Bengal. |

GANGTOK: Sikkim has recorded steepest fall in poverty level in the country on account of increase in per capita consumption and the proportion of the poor living below poverty line in the urban area is lowest among all states.
Latest data released by the Planning Commission says that in Sikkim, the proportion of people below the poverty line (BPL) came down from 30.9 per cent in 2004-05 to 8.19 per cent in 2011-12, a decline of 22 per cent due to inclusive and equitable development of the entire state, an official release said.
The number of people living below poverty line in Sikkim has come down from 1.70 lakh in 2004-05 to 51,000 in 2011-12 and the proportion of the poor in the Himalayan state remains well below the national average.
According to Planning Commission, Sikkim has been ranked among the five best performing states in poverty reduction in the country. States with the least proportion of poor living below poverty line are Goa (5.09 per cent), Kerala (7.05 per cent), Himachal Pradesh (8.06 per cent), Sikkim (8.19 per cent), Punjab (8.26 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (9.20 per cent).
The average monthly per capital expenditure in rural and urban areas of Sikkim has been estimated at Rs 1445.06 and Rs 2528.11 in comparison to national average monthly per capital expenditure of Rs 1287.17 and Rs 2477.02 in rural and urban areas respectively, the release said.
Around 9.85 per cent of rural population and 3.66 per cent of urban population of the Sikkim lives below poverty line in comparison to national average of 25.70 per cent rural population and 13.70 per cent urban population living below poverty line, according to latest planning commission data.
Sikkim has the lowest 3.66 per cent urban population living below poverty line which is minimum among all states and is followed by Goa (4.09 per cent), Haryana (4.33 per cent) and Kerala (4.97 per cent).

Poverty declines sharply in Sikkim
Referring to the Planning Commission data, the statement said, the number of people below poverty line in Sikkim has come down from 170,000 in 2004-05 to 80,000 in 2009-10 and and it declined further to 51,000 in 2011-12.
The proportion of the poor in the Himalayan state remains well below the national average of 21.9 percent.
The number of persons below poverty line has been reduced by one-fifth in the state and a sizeable population of 1,19,000 persons living below poverty line have been lifted out of poverty during the last seven years as a result of various developmental programmes launched by the state government.
“About 23,000 households have been brought above poverty line in the state during the seven-year period,” the statement said.
Sikkim is ranked among the five best performing states in poverty reduction. The state with lowest proportion of people living below poverty line is Goa with 5.09 percent, followed by Kerala 7.05 percent and Himachal Pradesh 8.06 percent.
Sikkim is at the fourth position with the proportion of people living below poverty line at 8.19 percent, as per the latest Planning Commission data.
Around 9.85 percent of rural population and 3.66 percent of urban population of Sikkim lives below the poverty line as compared to the national average of 25.70 percent for rural and 13.7 percent for urban areas.
